Wildlife at Loch of Blairs

The Loch, and it’s surroundings, are a haven for wildlife and the 3 waterside bird hides (The Swan, Otter & Osprey hides) and Squirrel Hide (near the boathouse) provide the perfect locations for watching it all.

Regularly seen are the beautiful Red Squirrels and occasionally you will be lucky enough to spot Pine Martens & Otters.

Birds are in abundance, with the loch having resident Mallards, Moor Hens, Herons, Coots and Little Grebes along with the visiting Swans, Tufted Ducks, Mandarin Ducks and, of course, Ospreys. At the Squirrel hide the observation area is a constant flurry of Blue Tits, Great Tits, Coal Tits, Robins and Chaffinches, but sit patiently and you’ll also spot Crested Tits, Woodpeckers, Jays and Crossbills.

Our Trustee, and experienced amateur photographer, Mike Sutherland has kindly given us permission to show some of the wonderful wildlife photographs he has taken at the loch.

The Crested Tit is an iconic species of the pinewoods of northern Scotland where it has a very restricted distribution. With a population in the UK of only around 1,500 breeding pairs, the vast majority of which are in Scotland, we are delighted that we see them regularly on the feeders at the Squirrel Hide (The Squirrel Hide).

Why not come along and take some photographs for yourself, or just sit in the wonderful tranquility of the loch’s surroundings and enjoy the spectacle.
